What is TPMS and Should I Get It?
It’s that time of year when snow is predicted to fall frequently, and we need to be more aware of the road conditions than ever before. That means it’s time to switch out your all-season tires for winter ones. When you do, though, should you consider getting a TPMS? This guide outlines what TPMS is and whether getting it on winter tires can benefit you.
What is TPMS?
The majority of all vehicles come equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which measure the pressure in your tires and alerts you when that pressure decreases. When your tires’ pressure dips below a certain level, it will let you know with a symbol on your dashboard, allowing you to take the time to fill each tire to its appropriate pressure range. Your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure range can be found in your car’s owner’s manual or on the driver’s side door jamb.
The Importance of TPMS
While TPMS isn’t mandatory in Canada like it is in the United States, it’s still a good idea to have one on your vehicle. When your tire’s pressure dips below its recommended range, it increases the likelihood of a flat tire and decreases your ability to control your car. It also can affect how much fuel your car uses to run, increasing the number of stops you will have to make at the gas station. So, to make sure your car continues to run smoothly, a TPMS should be a part of your vehicle.
TPMS and Winter Tires
If you have a TPMS already, it’s important to note that it can be affected when you switch your tires over to winter ones – especially if you choose to downsize your wheels.
