Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV’s)

In 1997, Toyota changed the automotive world with the launch of the Prius; the first-ever Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) . Powered by Toyota’s groundbreaking Hybrid Synergy Drive, HEVs never need to be plugged in. Instead, they seamlessly switch between electric power, gasoline power, or a combination of both to deliver fuel efficiency, performance, and lower emissions.

How it works:

Starting Up: In most conditions, only the electric motor is engaged; saving fuel and delivering instant torque with minimal emissions.
Accelerating & Cruising: The gas engine and electric motor team up for smooth, powerful acceleration, while excess energy helps recharge the battery.
Decelerating & Braking: The electric motor takes over. Regenerative braking captures energy from slowing down and stores it in the battery.
Resting & Reversing: When stopped, the gas engine shuts off to conserve fuel (unless the battery is low). At low speeds in reverse, only the electric motor is required.

The result? Smooth, responsive acceleration, impressive fuel efficiency, and up to 70% fewer emissions than conventional gas and diesel engines. And since the battery recharges itself as you drive, you’ll never need to plug in.

Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV’s)

In 2012, Toyota launched the Prius Plug-in, its first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). Since then, Toyota PHEVs have combined the best of both worlds: the proven efficiency of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) with the added advantage of an extended, CO₂ emissions-free electric-only driving range.

With a larger battery and more powerful motor than conventional hybrids, Toyota PHEVs can travel faster and further in EV-mode alone, so you spend more time in zero-fuel driving and reduce emissions even more. Like HEVs, PHEVs recharge through regenerative braking, but they also give you the option to plug in at home, at work, or at public charging stations for additional EV range. Charging is simple, and times vary depending on whether you’re using Level 1 or Level 2 charging.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV’s)

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV’s)

Toyota began developing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) back in 1992, and in 2014, they introduced the world to the Mirai sedan. FCEVs are fueled by hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, making it an ideal power source. Toyota’s revolutionary fuel cell stack generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen stored on board and oxygen from the atmosphere. When hydrogen is produced using renewable energy, it is completely carbon-free, and when used to power an FCEV like the Mirai, the only tailpipe emission is water vapor. Where refueling infrastructure exists, Toyota FCEV owners simply fill the hydrogen fuel tank.

FCEVs are safe, featuring multi-patented, carbon-fiber-wrapped, polymer-lined hydrogen tanks built in a three-layer structure that can absorb five times the crash energy of steel. Additionally, sensors stop the flow of hydrogen in a high-speed collision, and hydrogen-related parts are located outside the cabin to help ensure that leaked hydrogen doesn’t build up.
