Overview
The RAV4 from Toyota has been around for more than 20 years; it debuted in May 1994. At the time, it was a two-door, four-seater with a four-wheel-drive transmission.
Today, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 has significantly grown and developed and is currently on its fifth generation of models with hybrid options since 2019. In the middle of 2020, a plug-in hybrid was introduced.
In Canada, this compact SUV is a popular choice as it has the most options for powertrains plus conventional and plug-in hybrid options. Models are available for preorder at Salmon Arm, BC.
What’s new for 2022
This year, Toyota RAV4 has added a New Hybrid SE trim, the fifth unique model with the standard powertrain. Most 2022 RAV4s get new headlights, and some get new wheel designs.
With prices starting from $28,850, the new trims include the 2022 Toyota RAV4 in LE, LE Hybrid, XLE, XLE Hybrid, SE Hybrid, XSE Hybrid, Trail, Limited and Limited Hybrid. Models that run on gas alone have a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed transmission. Hybrid models have the same engine plus two electric motors and transmission, continuously varying.
Standard features
All 2022 RAV4s come with a lane-departure alert, radar cruise control, automatic high beams, rear cross-traffic alert and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of blind-spot monitors.
The LE trim has six-speaker audio, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, 17-inch steel wheels with covers, LED headlights and front-seat heated seats. The LE Hybrid adds dual-zone A/C and alloy wheels.
The XLE comes with a power driver's seat, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, power tailgate, projector LED lights and a sunroof. XLEs that use gas have dual-zone AC and alloy wheels.
The XSE Hybrid brings you a digital rearview mirror, LED front accent lighting, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and a 7.0-inch digital gauge.
Trail models upgrade you with LED fog lights, 19-inch wheels, Softex upholstery and wireless smartphone charging.
For the Limited trim, you have a hands-free tailgate, heated rear seats, 9.0-inch touchscreen, ventilated front seats, bird's-eye-view cameras and front parking sensors. Limited models that run on gas have a digital rearview mirror, while Limited Hybrids drive on 18-inch wheels plus LED fog lights.
Fuel efficiency
The RAV4 hybrids are built in Canada, and these models are the most efficient non-plug-ins with fuel consumption that comes up to 5.8 city/6.8 highway L/100km. The models that run on gas are at 8.5 city/6.8 highway L/100km with FWD, and AWD gives you 8.7 city/6.9 highway L/100km. The Trail model offers 9.5 city/7.1 highway L/100km.
Hybrids
All 2022 Toyota Hybrid RAV4s come standard with a self-charging hybrid battery, which means the car never has to be plugged in as it recharges while driving — thanks to a regenerative braking system that captures and changes electricity and automatically stores it in the battery.
