Exterior and Looks
There's no doubt about it: for a large three-row SUV, the Highlander is nicely designed with a chunky but sleek outline. The sporty impression can be taken even further with the new XSE trim which adds great-looking features including black exterior accents and 20-inch wheels.
Powertrain and Performance
There are two main powertrain options for the 2021 Highlander. As standard, there's a 3.5L V6 gas engine cranking out a healthy 295 horsepower, pushed through an eight-speed automatic transmission to a choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. This configuration produces highly reliable performance, managing 0-100 kmh in just 6.7 seconds, alongside a relatively lean fuel economy rating of 8.1L / 100km on the highway.
The alternative powertrain is a hybrid, comprising a 2.5L four-cylinder gas engine with dual electric motors for a combined total of 243 horsepower. The output is again passed to either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, but this time through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). As you'd expect, this powertrain provides much better fuel economy with a highway figure of 6.5L / 100km, although the acceleration is a little less aggressive, making the 0-100 kmh transition in 7.3 seconds.
Infotainment and Tech
As standard, the Highlander is fitted with an 8" infotainment touchscreen including the usual suspects of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot facility. Higher trims upgrade the screen to an impressively large 12.3" display.
Satellite radio is provided as standard, with the option of upgrading the regular six-speaker audio to an 11-speaker JBL sound system.
Safety Features
The 2021 Highlander receives top marks in crash tests from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. Adding to this physical safety is a suite of driver assist featured as standard across the range, with highlights including:
- Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
